As a healthy eater – especially this month, as I’m doing the BHF charity Dechox – I am always on the lookout for things to put in my mouth that are not bad for me and that taste good.
In today’s edition of ‘Is it any good?’ I’ll be trying out a recipe for healthy cookies… because apparently, there’s such a thing.
I love to bake and make my own healthier versions of things, so when I heard about these magical banana cookies I was on-board immediately. Just two ingredients, minimal prep time and just 60 calories a cookie – perfect, guilt-free snacking. You can even add in extra things to gives them different flavours, like chocolate chips, peanut butter or raisins if you’re into that sort of thing.
So the cookies were very cheap/easy to make, but are they any good?
First of all, they’re not at all like a cookie, more like a really depressing flapjack. They’re… I mean… they’re not disgusting – I think that’s the highest compliment I can pay them. If I were starving on a desert island, I could happily eat them, so they’re preferable to eating bugs. They’re as OK as baked mashed banana and oats can be (I threw some chopped hazelnuts into mine, they were the best bit).
You want to make your own, right? Of course you do, after I’ve made them sound so appetising.
Preheat your oven to gas mark 4/160 °C. In a bowl, mash up two ripe bananas and mix in 180 grams of rolled oats – yum! Throw in any extra stuff you think might make them taste of anything but sadness – although keep in mind this will up the calories – like chocolate, nuts or dried fruit. Line a baking tray and separate the mixture into 16 balls, pressing them flat on your tray before baking for about 10-12 minutes. Allow them to fully cool before you eat them.
And there you have it. Squishy blobs of chewy banana oat not-cookie cookies. Isn’t dieting fun?!
