So I sabotaged my brother’s Dechox efforts, just hours into day 1.
OK, look, I didn’t mean to – I was just trying to be nice. We were out shopping, and popped into Starbucks to hide from the rain and get some much-needed caffeine. Even when I’m not Dechox-ing, 99.9% of the time I am one of those healthy eating bores and I worry that it makes people think they can’t eat things that contain calories when they are around me. However, my willpower is infallible, so when my bro pointed out at the chocolate and gingerbread muffins looked nice, I decided to buy him one.
I thought I was doing a nice thing! I even grabbed myself a skinny blueberry muffin (safe the the knowledge I could skip a meal to offset the 317 calories worth of damage, considering that’s the skinny option) so that he didn’t feel bad about eating alone. Then he took a bite and…
‘Oops. This is chocolate.’
Oh yeah, one of the key ingredients in a chocolate and gingerbread muffin is, in fact, chocolate. He did say it was nice, though…
I think being a healthy eater is making this a little easier for me, because I eat quite low-calorie which means I shun the chocolatey options anyway, but the little things like chocolate on top of coffees and even many depressing little low-calorie, low-fun healthy option sweet things can often involve chocolate so you’ve got to be careful.
And so, with mochas, chocolate on top of your cappuccino and pretty much everything Starbucks have to offer worthy of putting your mouth off the menu, here’s how to survive Starbucks while you’re Dechox-ing.
Drink. Yes, you can have a cappuccino without chocolate on top, but that’s boring. If you think you’ll miss the sweetness, opt for a caramel macchiato. It’s stronger than a latte, sweeter than a cappuccino, and has a yummy caramel drizzle on top.
Eat. Ok, I’m just going to say it, skinny muffins suck. By swapping the classic blueberry muffin for the skinny blueberry muffin you will save 131 calories, but it kind of feels like they achieved less calories by swapping some of the ingredients for pulped up cardboard. So if you’re not watching what you eat, the classic blueberry muffin is a great choice. They also do a lemon and poppyseed muffin that is delicious (but, be warned, it is not skinny any more!). Neither of them are Mississippi Mud Pie delicious, but they’re they best you’re gong to get chocolate-free.
